Join us Wednesday, January 20, 2016 for the MLTA Third Annual Lobby Day
What is Lobby Day?
MLTA Lobby Day gives our members an effective way to let members of the General Assembly know MLTA’s positions through personal meetings, ideally with constituents. We will identify Participants’ Senators and Delegates, and try to set up a 10-15 minute appointment to discuss MLTA issues with those representatives. Meet at 8 am, at the Maryland Inn; 16 Church Circle; Annapolis, MD 21401. Lunch will be served at about 12 pm.
Why should you participate?
Lobbying provides elected and appointed officials with the information they need to make the best decisions for their constituencies. The information and education you can provide may be critical to the decisions that legislators make on issues that concern the title industry. Legislators respond to constituents and to personal contacts.
The 2016 Session of the General Assembly opens January 13, 2016. Historically, the second session after the general election (which this will be) is the most productive in any four year term of the general Assembly. While we do not anticipate a particularly active session for the MLTA, one never knows what may occur in any session, and we want to be prepared to deal in an effective manner with any issues that arise. We want the members of the General Assembly to know who MLTA is and what we stand for, and the way to do that is to introduce ourselves. The MLTA is behind legislation clarifying how a quiet title action should be brought in Maryland, and this is the second year the bill will be before the General Assembly. We also anticipate that the Uniform Transfer on Death Deed (TOD Deed) Act will be back for a fourth year. We have been very successful in defeating this legislation in the past, and want to continue to educate legislators why MLTA members are opposed to it. Hopefully, by Lobby Day, we will have bill numbers for you on these items.
What do I need to do?
Sign up! Please complete the form below and submit it to Margaret Webb (MLTA@mdlta.com). We will have talking points prepared for all participants, and will provide some tips on approaching legislators the morning of the 20th. Stay tuned for exact times; but we will meet in Annapolis in the morning. We will provide lunch for all participants who desire to stay to debrief after the meetings with legislators.
